For the first time, NZ Lotteries has ventured into the online space with its new platform, aiming to boost its revenue. The organization expects to generate around $7 million this year from its digital presence.
The MyLotto website, operated by New Zealand Lotteries, experienced a strong start with approximately 1,000 registrations on its first day. This initial success is just the beginning, as the Chief Executive of NZ Lotteries anticipates continued income growth.
The new site is designed to make it easier for infrequent Lotto players to purchase tickets. It includes features such as self-nominated spending caps and options for users to exclude themselves from games. However, once a self-exclusion is set, it cannot be reversed.
The Problem Gambling Foundation has raised concerns about the new platform, particularly in light of financial pressures. John Stansfield, the Foundation’s Chief Executive, criticized the move, questioning why a responsible government would encourage more gambling during an economic downturn. He argues that promoting such platforms exacerbates financial pressures on vulnerable individuals.
NZ Lotteries plans to provide relevant information to high-spending players. Despite its extensive investment in gambling advertising, the organization faces criticism from Stansfield, who believes that the approval of such sites contributes to widespread suffering in the country.
