WASHINGTON, D.C. — (PRESS RELEASE)
The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), a leading grassroots advocacy group with over one million members nationwide, expressed optimism about working with the newly sworn-in members of the 112th Congress to establish a licensed and regulated online poker environment in the U.S.
PPA's Continued Advocacy
Former Senator Alfonse D'Amato, chairman of the PPA, acknowledged the disappointment in Congress's failure to act on online poker regulation last year. However, he remains hopeful about educating new congressional members on the benefits of such legislation. "It is crucial for the 112th Congress to recognize the consumer protections and economic advantages of licensing this booming industry," D'Amato said. He anticipates numerous discussions in the coming months about implementing these important consumer protection measures.
Momentum Built in 2010
Throughout 2010, the PPA, along with its members, made significant progress toward online poker regulation through collaboration with lawmakers, consumer groups, and other stakeholders. Although a bill was not introduced, the PPA plans to build on this momentum by meeting with new Congress members to further their understanding of the benefits of this legislation.
Call to Action for PPA Members
This week, the PPA is urging members residing in the districts of newly elected House and Senate members to email their representatives, advocating for support of poker rights. "On behalf of millions of American online poker players, the PPA advocacy team will continue to educate lawmakers on the importance of establishing sensible laws for a safe and regulated poker environment," said John Pappas, executive director of the PPA. "We need active support from players to reach out to their Congress members and demand change."
Ongoing Efforts and Collaboration
In addition to engaging with new congressional members, the PPA will continue its collaboration with Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), who has been a key advocate for online poker regulation. The organization will also stay involved in state-level efforts to regulate online gaming, provide legal support against anti-internet gambling laws, and monitor the misuse of these laws against players.
